SMMT seeks to set up local branch

The highly respected and long established Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders is considering setting up a separate Northern Ireland branch.

The move would provide an enhanced service for local industry, providing a high element of both leadership and protection for members here, as well as a strong voice on the vital issues affecting the sector.

For example, the SMMT recently supported the Department for Transport’s series of seminars on whole vehicle type approval, which attracted over 350 people from across the UK, including Northern Ireland.
Bodybuilders made up the bulk of the audience, with suppliers, dealers, van, truck, trailer, bus and coach makers as well. Along with the SMMT, DAF, Iveco, Optare, Citroën, Renault Trucks and Volvo Truck and Bus supported all the events, with presentations at each one.

The aim was to help firms and the DfT understand the implications of the forthcoming whole vehicle type approval laws. Early indications are that there will be more seminars, perhaps early this New Year, to look at specific details.

Membership of the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders, of course, brings many other benefits. It represents the automotive industry at a national, European and global level across a range of issues from environment, legislation, safety and security, through to education and the economy. It publishes statements, policy documents, consultations and a wide array of background briefings to members, the press and public.

SMMT’s policy and economics department offers many different products and services to members and deals with a wide range of issues from climate change to consumer affairs, playing an active role in understanding, explaining and supporting the industry whenever an issue arises.
